Who Is Corinne Bailey Rae?

Corinne Bailey Rae is a British singer-songwriter, musician and producer. Born in Leeds, England in 1979, she began playing guitar and writing songs at a young age. After working as a session musician and releasing her debut album in 2006, she continued to gain recognition for her unique blend of soul, jazz and alternative music. She has collaborated with John Legend, Jay-Z, Common, Will.i.am and Usher. Her latest album The Heart Speaks in Whispers was released in 2016.

Early Life & Career Beginnings

Bailey Rae was born Corinne Jacqueline Bailey on February 26th, 1979 in Leeds, England. She grew up in the Chapeltown neighbourhood of Leeds with her parents and two sisters. From an early age she was exposed to a variety of musical styles from reggae to jazz and soul music. She began playing guitar when she was 12 years old and wrote her first song at the age of 15. As a teenager she attended the Leeds College of Music where she studied classical cello, jazz singing and music technology. After graduating in 2001 she began performing around the UK as a session musician for various artists including Tony Rich and Carleen Anderson.

Breakthrough Success

In 2006 Bailey Rae released her self-titled debut album which was met with critical acclaim. The album featured the hit single “Put Your Records On” which reached number 2 on the UK Singles Chart and won her two Brit Awards for Best Breakthrough Act and Best Female Solo Artist. The album went on to be certified 3x platinum in the UK. In 2008 she released her second album The Sea which featured the singles “I’d Do It All Again” and “Like a Star”. The album was nominated for Best Pop Vocal Album at the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards.

Recent Projects & Collaborations

In 2010 Bailey Rae released her third studio album The Heart Speaks in Whispers which featured the singles “Been To The Moon” and “Green Aphrodisiac”. The album was nominated for Best R&B Album at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards. In 2016 she collaborated with John Legend on the single “Like I Used To” which was featured on his album Darkness and Light. She has also collaborated with Jay-Z, Common, Will.i.am and Usher among others.
