Who Is Crystal Gayle?

Crystal Gayle (born Brenda Gail Webb on January 9, 1951) is an American country music singer and songwriter. She is best known for her 1977 country-pop crossover hit, ""Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue"".

Early Life & Career Beginnings

Born in Paintsville, Kentucky, Gayle was the fourth of seven children born to Clara Marie (Ramey) and Melvin Theodore ""Ted"" Webb. Having grown up in an atmosphere of gospel music, she began singing at a very young age. She attended Paintsville High School and released her first single, ""I've Cried the Blue Right Out of My Eyes"", in 1970.

Success & Later Career

Gayle's biggest success came with the release of her 1977 album We Must Believe in Magic. The album contained two of her most popular songs, ""Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue"" and ""Talking in Your Sleep"". Both were huge hits on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart and both crossed over to the Billboard Hot 100. Gayle went on to release a total of 16 studio albums throughout her career and has earned numerous awards including a Grammy Award for Best Female Country Vocal Performance for ""Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue"".

Legacy

Gayle has been inducted into the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame (1995), the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame (2001), and the Grand Ole Opry (2017). She is also a recipient of the BMI Icon award. Her music continues to be appreciated by generations of fans and she is considered one of the most successful female artists in country music.
