Who Is Feist?
Feist is the stage name of Leslie Feist, a Canadian singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who rose to fame in the early 2000s with her breakthrough album Let It Die. Born in 1976 in Amherst, Nova Scotia, she moved to Calgary, Alberta as a teenager, where she attended Bishop Carroll High School. During her high school studies, she began to hone her musical talents and perform at various local venues.
Early Career
In 1997, she joined the band Placebo and released the EP The Yellow Tape. This was followed by two albums with the band: 1999’s Sunday at Devil Dirt and 2000’s One in a Million. In 2000, she returned to Calgary and began working with another group called By Divine Right, which released its debut album Bless This Mess in 2001. Feist also toured as part of Broken Social Scene from 2002 to 2005.
Breakthrough Years
Feist's solo career began in earnest in 2003 when she released Monarch (Lay Your Jewelled Head Down). The album garnered positive reviews but didn't reach a wide audience. In 2004, however, she released her breakthrough album Let It Die, which featured the hit single “Mushaboom”. The record earned four Juno Awards, including Songwriter of the Year and New Artist of the Year. Following the success of Let It Die, Feist released The Reminder in 2007. This album featured the hit single “1234” and earned five Juno Awards.
Recent Years and Touring
Feist continued to tour extensively throughout the late 2000s and early 2010s, releasing two more albums along the way: Metals (2011) and Pleasure (2017). She has also collaborated with numerous other artists, including Peaches, Chilly Gonzales, and Drake. In 2015, she released an EP titled Live in Vancouver that was recorded during her tour for Metals. Feist continues to tour extensively throughout North America and Europe.
