Benjamin Chase Harper, popularly known as Ben Harper, is an American singer-songwriter, musician, and multi-instrumentalist. He was born on 28th October 1969 in Claremont, California. He has released thirteen studio albums, won awards such as the Grammy Award for Best Blues Album for his album “Get Up!”, and has gained a massive fan following across the world.

Early Life and Career

Harper began playing guitar at the age of eight. He learned to play different instruments such as the lap steel guitar, banjo, and harmonica from his father. His father also exposed him to different genres of music such as folk, blues, gospel, reggae, and soul. At the age of twelve, Harper recorded his first album “Pleasure and Pain” with his band. His first solo album “Welcome To The Cruel World” was released in 1994. The album was critically acclaimed and received immense popularity worldwide.

Rise to Fame

Harper's fame rose with the release of his second solo album “Fight For Your Mind” in 1995 that peaked at number three on the Billboard Heatseekers charts. His subsequent albums such as “Live From Mars” (2001), “Diamonds on the Inside” (2003), and “Both Sides of the Gun” (2006) also gained immense popularity. In 2006, Harper released his first live album “Live At The Hollywood Bowl” that sold over 500,000 copies worldwide.

Awards and Achievements

Harper won his first Grammy Award for Best Traditional Soul Gospel Album for his album “There Will Be a Light” in 2005.He won the Grammy Award for Best Blues Album for his album “Get Up!” in 2013. He also won numerous awards such as the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Album for his album “Both Sides of the Gun” in 2007.

Personal Life

Harper married actress Laura Dern in 2005 but separated in 2010. He then married Jaclyn Matfus in 2015. He currently resides in Los Angeles with his family.
