Who is Chila Jatun?

Chila Jatun, born Gustavo Ortega, is a renowned Bolivian folk musician from the city of Cochabamba. He has released numerous albums throughout his career, including Llajta Lliklla, Kuntur Mallku, and Canciones de Amor y Tierra.

Early Life and Career Beginnings

Ortega was born in 1957 in Cochabamba, Bolivia. Although his parents were not musicians, they were passionate about traditional Andean music and encouraged their son to pursue his musical dreams. At the age of sixteen, he began performing with local folkloric bands and soon began to make a name for himself around town. In 1985, he founded the band Chila Jatun, which would become one of the most popular bands in Bolivia.

Rise to Fame

In the late 1980s, Chila Jatun began to gain recognition outside of Bolivia. His unique blend of traditional Andean music with contemporary Latin American styles earned him a wide following both in South America and around the world. His first album, Llajta Lliklla, was released in 1989 and featured collaborations with several other prominent South American artists, such as Susana Baca, Ramiro Boix, Nina Paste, and Guitarrista Guadalupe Rivero.

Legacy

Throughout his career, Ortega has won several awards for his contributions to Bolivian folk music. He was inducted into the Latin Grammy Hall of Fame in 2009 for his work with Chila Jatun. He has also been honored by UNESCO for preserving the traditional culture of Bolivia through his music. Today, Ortega continues to perform live and record new music. He is widely considered to be one of the most important figures in Bolivian music history.
