CSR, also known as Curt Smith, is an English musician, singer, and songwriter best known as the co-founder and former lead vocalist of the British band Tears for Fears. He has also collaborated with other artists like Kenny Loggins, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis.
Early Life
Smith was born in Bath, Somerset in 1961. His father was a schoolteacher, and Smith studied at King Edward’s School in Bath. His early musical influences included David Bowie and The Jam. In 1981, he co-founded Tears for Fears with Roland Orzabal.
Career Highlights
Tears for Fears achieved international success in the 1980s with hits like 'Everybody Wants to Rule the World', 'Shout', and 'Head Over Heels'. Smith left Tears For Fears in 1991 to pursue a solo career. His debut album Soul On Board featured the singles 'Laid So Low (Tears Roll Down)' and 'I've Got A Life'. He also released two albums in collaboration with The Fixx – 1996’s 'Elemental' and 1999’s 'Calm Animals'. Smith has collaborated with many other artists including Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis on the song 'Tear It Up' from their album 'Design Of A Decade'.
Later Career
In 2004, Smith reunited with Orzabal to reform Tears for Fears. The duo have released two albums since then – 2004’s 'Everybody Loves a Happy Ending' and 2018’s 'Rule The World'. Smith has also released solo albums 'Halfway Pleased' (2008) and 'Truest Stars Burn The Brightest' (2014). He is currently working on a new album.
Personal Life
Smith is married to Canadian singer-songwriter Gail Ann Dorsey. He lives in Los Angeles and has two children, Willa and Samuel.
