Gilbert O'Sullivan (born Raymond Edward O'Sullivan on December 1, 1946) is an Irish singer-songwriter who rose to fame during the 1970s. He is best known for hits such as 'Alone Again (Naturally)', 'Clair', and 'Get Down'.

Early Life

O'Sullivan was born in Waterford, Ireland. He grew up in a musical family, and began playing the piano at age six. As a teen, he began writing his own songs and performing them in local pubs. At age 16, he moved to Swindon, England, where he worked as a store clerk and wrote songs on the side.

Music Career

In 1967, O'Sullivan signed a recording contract with CBS Records. His first single, 'Disappear', was released that same year. Two years later, he released his debut album, Himself. It was followed by 1970's Back to Front and 1971's Himself Again. O'Sullivan achieved his greatest success with 1972's Back to Front, which reached number one in the UK Albums Chart.

O'Sullivan's biggest hit single was 1972's 'Alone Again (Naturally)', which reached number two on the UK Singles Chart and number seven on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. Other notable singles include 1973's 'Clair', 1974's 'Get Down', and 1975's 'Nothing Rhymed'. He released several albums throughout the 70s and 80s, including I'm a Writer Not a Fighter (1973), A Stranger in My Own Back Yard (1974), Southpaw (1977), Off Centre (1979), and In the Key of G (1981).

Later Career & Personal Life

In 2006, O'Sullivan made his stage debut with a production of Alan Ayckbourn's play A Small Family Business. In 2011, he released his 18th studio album, Gilbertville. He continues to tour and perform live around the world. O'Sullivan married Aase Bredal in 1971 and they had two sons together before divorcing in 1984. He lives in Jersey with his partner Michelle Roche.
