Helena Paparizou is a Greek pop singer, songwriter and multi-platinum recording artist. She rose to fame as the winner of the first season of Greek Idol in 2003. She also represented Greece in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2005, winning the competition with her song “My Number One”.
Early Life
Helena Paparizou was born Nektaria Paparizou on February 31, 1982 in Borås, Sweden. Her parents were both from Greece; they had moved to Sweden for work. At age 3, Helena moved back to Greece with her family. As a teenager she studied music theory and singing at the Philippos Nakas Conservatory. In 2001 she auditioned for the first season of Greek Idol, which she won in 2003.
Career
In 2004 Helena released her debut album Protereotita, which quickly became a success in Greece and Cyprus. The album was certified triple platinum in Greece and platinum in Cyprus. Following its success, Helena released a series of successful albums including The Game of Love (2005), My Number One (2005), Vrisko To Logo Na Zo (2007), The Lights of Anatolia (2008), and Giro Apo T Oneiro (2010).
In 2006 Helena represented Greece at the Eurovision Song Contest with the song “My Number One”. She won the competition with 230 points, becoming the first Greek act to do so. She also holds the record for most consecutive weeks at number one on the Greek Singles Chart with “My Number One” and “Gigolo”.
Personal Life
In 2007 Helena married her long time boyfriend, Swedish-Greek entrepreneur Okyanos Kederis. The couple have two children together: Maximus Kederis (born 2010) and Eleftheria Kederis (born 2012). Helena is also active in charity work, having been appointed UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador for Greece in 2011.
