Who Is Jacky Cheung?

Jacky Cheung is a Hong Kong-born singer, songwriter and actor. He is considered one of the “Four Heavenly Kings” of Hong Kong music. He was born in 1961 in Hong Kong and came to prominence in the 1980s as part of the Cantopop movement, becoming one of its most successful artists and one of the most prominent Cantopop singers in both the Chinese speaking world and beyond. His career spans over 30 years, during which he has released more than 50 albums and won numerous awards including the Golden Melody Awards for Best Male Singer in 1994.

Music Career

Cheung’s first album was released in 1985, and he soon became a rising star in the Cantopop scene. His songs often focus on love and relationships, often with a melancholic or sentimental edge. He is known for his powerful vocal range and emotional delivery. In addition to Cantonese songs, he has also released Mandarin albums as well as duets with other popular singers such as Anita Mui and Faye Wong.

Cheung has collaborated with many other famous singers including Leslie Cheung, Alan Tam, Andy Lau, Jordan Chan and beyond. He has won numerous awards for his music, including two Golden Melody Awards for Best Male Singer in 1994 and 2002 respectively. In 2008, he was voted by Time Magazine as one of “The 25 Most Influential Asians of the Past 25 Years”. In 2010 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from The University of York in the UK for his contribution to popular music.

Personal Life

Cheung is married to May Lo with whom he has two daughters. In addition to singing, he is also an accomplished actor who has appeared in films such as “A Chinese Ghost Story” (1987) and “Love On A Diet” (2001). He is also an active philanthropist who donates time and money to charities throughout Asia.
