John Williams: An Introduction

John Towner Williams is an American composer, conductor, and pianist who is widely regarded as one of the greatest film composers of all time. With over 60 years of experience creating some of the most iconic film scores in history, John Williams is one of the best-known musicians today. He has composed some of the most recognizable music from movies like Star Wars, Jurassic Park, Jaws, E.T., and the Harry Potter series. Williams has also composed pieces for the Olympic Games, ballet, and the concert hall.

Early Life

Williams was born in February 1932 in Floral Park, New York. He began playing piano at a young age and was soon performing with local orchestras by the age of 12. When he was 15 years old, he enrolled in the Juilliard School in New York City to study music composition and conducting. He graduated from Juilliard in 1956.

Career Highlights

In 1961, Williams made his Hollywood debut composing music for the film adaptation of Ernest Hemingway’s book The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone. From there he went on to compose music for classic films like Jaws (1975), E.T. (1982), Jurassic Park (1993), Harry Potter (2001-2011), Star Wars (1977-2019), Memoirs of a Geisha (2005), and Lincoln (2012). In addition to his work as a composer for films and television shows, Williams has composed several concert pieces such as “Escapades” for saxophone and orchestra which won him an Academy Award in 2002.

Awards

Williams has won an impressive amount of awards throughout his career, including five Academy Awards, four Golden Globe Awards, seven BAFTA Awards, twenty-one Grammy Awards, and four Emmy Awards. He has also been nominated for over fifty additional awards. In 2016, he was inducted into the American Classical Music Hall of Fame.
