Joy Adaeze Crookes is a 20-year-old British singer-songwriter from South London. Her parents were born in Nigeria, and she grew up singing in church and listening to her father's vinyl collection of soul and R&B records. She took her love for music to the stage, performing at local open mic nights and writing her own songs.
Joy's Music
By the time she was 17, Joy had attracted the attention of producers in the music industry. She released her debut single, 'Mother May I Sleep With Danger?', in 2018, which was followed by 'Since I Left You' and 'Hurts'. Her most successful single to date is 'Why Do You Love Me', which hit the Top 40 of the UK Singles Chart in 2020. Joy has also released two EPs: 'Perspective' in 2019, and 'Sketches From an Island' in 2020.
Collaborations and Live Performances
As well as releasing her own music, Joy has collaborated with artists such as WSTRN, Yxng Bane and Jorja Smith. She also supported Loyle Carner on his UK tour in 2019. In addition to this, she has performed at festivals including Wireless, Reading & Leeds, Latitude and The Great Escape. Joy was also named as one of BBC Music’s Sound Of 2020 nominees.
