Krishna Das (real name Jeffrey Kagel) is an American devotional singer-songwriter, musician, and chant master known for his musical interpretations of ancient Hindu mantras and kirtans. He has released 17 albums since 1996, including the Grammy-nominated Live Ananda in 2013. His most popular recordings include “Hare Krishna”, “Radhe Radhe”, and “Jaya Jagada”.

Early Life

Krishna Das was born in 1947 in New York City to a Jewish family. His parents, both Holocaust survivors, encouraged their son to explore different religions. As a young man, he travelled to India where he studied yoga and meditation with Neem Karoli Baba and Maharaj-ji until the latter's passing in 1973. After that experience, he returned home to the United States to start a career in music.

Career

Krishna Das started recording chant music in the mid-1990s. He released his first album One Track Heart in 1996, which was followed by a series of albums such as Breath of the Heart (2001), Live Ananda (2013), and Heart Full of Soul (2015). In addition to his own recordings, he has collaborated with other artists such as Snatam Kaur, Deva Premal & Miten, and Jai Uttal. He has performed at venues around the world including Carnegie Hall, the Sydney Opera House, and The Hollywood Bowl.

Legacy

Krishna Das has been credited with bringing kirtan music to Western audiences. He has been featured in major publications such as The New York Times and Rolling Stone magazine. His recordings have been used in films such as Eat Pray Love (2010) and The Big Sick (2017).
