Introduction to Luz Casal

Luz Casal (born María Luz Casal Paz) is a Spanish singer, songwriter, and actress. She was born in Boimorto, Galicia, in 1957. Her career began in the early 1980s when she started singing in pubs and clubs throughout Spain. Since then, she has released 13 studio albums and has collaborated with many of Spain’s most iconic artists.

Career

Casal’s first album was released in 1983, titled “Yo Soy Como Soy”. The album was successful and she soon became a popular figure in the Spanish music scene. In 1985, she released her second album “Tú Me Estás Matando” which featured the single “Piensa en Mí”. The song gained her international recognition and remains one of her most popular songs to date. In the early 1990s, Casal released two more albums: “Al Otro Lado del Río” (1991) and “El Tiempo de la Luz” (1992). Both albums were well-received by critics and fans alike.

Collaborations

Throughout her career, Casal has collaborated with many of Spain’s most iconic artists such as Alejandro Sanz, Miguel Bosé, Julio Iglesias, Ana Belén and many more. In 2004, she collaborated with Julio Iglesias on the duet “Si Tú Te Vas” which was featured on Iglesias’ album “Divorcio”. The duet was a commercial success and peaked at number one on the Spanish charts.

Awards & Nominations

Casal has been nominated for 11 Latin Grammy Awards including Album of the Year for her album “El Tiempo de la Luz” in 1992. She also won Best Female Pop Vocal Album at the 1992 Latin Grammy Awards for her album “Tú Me Estás Matando”. In 2017, she was awarded the Silver Medal of Merit from the Civil Order of Alfonso X.

Legacy

Casal is one of Spain’s most popular singers and has had an influence on many of today’s young singers. She is widely considered to be one of the most important female singers in Spanish music history. Her music is still played regularly on Spanish radio stations and she continues to tour throughout Spain and other countries in Europe.
