The Success Story of Musical Youth

Musical Youth: A British Reggae Band

Musical Youth is a British reggae band from Birmingham, England. The group was formed in 1979 and is best known for their 1982 hit single “Pass the Dutchie”. The group consisted of five members: Michael Grant (keyboards), Derrick Simpson (vocals), Frederick Waite (vocals), Dennis Seaton (vocals/percussion) and Janet Kay (vocals).

Early Career and Success

In 1981, Musical Youth released their debut album “Youth of Today” which featured their first hit single “Pass the Dutchie”. The song became an instant hit, peaking at number one on the UK Singles Chart and number ten on the US Billboard Hot 100 Chart. The success of “Pass the Dutchie” saw Musical Youth become one of the most successful reggae bands in Europe in the early 1980s.

Collaborations and Later Career

Following their success with “Pass the Dutchie”, Musical Youth went on to collaborate with other reggae acts such as UB40, Madness and The Specials. In 1983, they released their second album “Different Style” which featured a cover version of Bob Marley’s “Could You Be Loved”. Despite not achieving the same level of success as “Pass the Dutchie”, the album still managed to reach number 40 on the UK Albums Chart.

Breakup and Reformation

After a series of lineup changes, Musical Youth disbanded in 1985 and all five members went on to pursue solo careers. In 2001, the original five members reunited for a series of concerts across Europe and released a new single “Youth Music”. In 2002, they released their third album “Rockers Revival” but it failed to chart. In 2004, they performed at Live 8 in London. Despite their lack of commercial success in recent years, Musical Youth remain one of the most iconic British reggae bands of all time.
