Mya Biography

Mýa Marie Harrison, known mononymously as Mýa, is an American singer, songwriter, producer, dancer, and actress. Born in Washington D.C., she began performing in local talent shows before moving to Los Angeles to pursue a career in music. In 1998, she released her self-titled debut album which included the hit single ""It's All About Me"". Since then, her music has continued to be a worldwide success with hits like ""Case of the Ex"", ""Lady Marmalade"", and ""Ghetto Superstar"".

Early Life and Education

Mýa was born on October 10th, 1979 in Washington D.C. to parents Sherman and Theresa Harrison. She has one older brother, Nijel, and two half-siblings from her mother's second marriage. Mýa began performing at a young age, joining a local dance group called TLC Dance Troupe at age 5 and competing in talent shows throughout her adolescence. At the age of 18 she moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in music.

Music Career

In 1998 Mýa released her self-titled debut album which included the hit single ""It's All About Me"". The album was certified platinum by the RIAA and peaked at number 25 on the Billboard 200 chart. The success of her debut album led to collaborations with artists like Lil Kim, Will.I.Am, Ginuwine, Sisqo, and Blackstreet. Her second album Fear of Flying (2000) included the hit single ""Case of the Ex"" which reached number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Acting Career

In addition to her music career, Mýa has also pursued an acting career. She made her film debut in 2000 in the movie In Too Deep and went on to appear in films like Chicago (2002), Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights (2004), Shall We Dance? (2004) and Cursed Part 3 (2006). She has also guest starred on television shows like Ugly Betty (2007) and The Bold & The Beautiful (2008).

Awards & Achievements

Mýa has had a very successful career both musically and as an actress. She has won numerous awards over the years including two Grammy Awards for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals for ""Lady Marmalade"" (2002) and Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals for ""The Boy Is Mine"" (1999). In addition to this she has also been nominated for numerous MTV Video Music Awards, NAACP Image Awards and Soul Train Music Awards.

Personal Life

Mýa has been married twice - firstly to rapper Silkk The Shocker from 1998 to 2000 and then to music producer Kaseem Dean from 2008 to 2011. In 2016 she welcomed her first child, a daughter named Avielle Janelle Dean.
