Biography

Raffi Cavoukian is a world-renowned Canadian singer-songwriter, author and advocate for children's issues. He has been delighting and educating children with his music since 1976. He has released over 20 albums of original songs, including his best-loved classics “Baby Beluga” and “Down By The Bay”. His music videos have been enjoyed by millions of families around the world. Raffi has also published seven books, including four bestsellers, and has written articles on topics ranging from child health to education. He has been the recipient of numerous awards and honors throughout his career.

Early Life

Raffi was born in Cairo, Egypt in 1948 to Armenian parents who had fled the Armenian Genocide of 1915. With his family he moved to Toronto, Canada in 1958 when he was 10 years old. As a teenager he attended the University of Toronto, graduating with a degree in philosophy. It was during this time that he began writing songs, inspired by the folk music of the day and the protest movement that was sweeping the nation.

Career

In 1976 Raffi released his first album Singable Songs for the Very Young, which became an instant classic among parents and preschoolers alike. Over the next two decades he continued to write and release new albums that were just as popular as his first. In addition to music, Raffi also wrote books for children such as The New Alphabet and The Buga Buga Book. He also wrote articles on topics related to education and child health. In 1989 he founded the not-for-profit organization Child Honouring, which promotes nurturing relationships between adults and children as a means of protecting children from harm.

Awards & Recognition

Throughout his career Raffi has received numerous awards and honors for his work with children. These include a star on Canada's Walk of Fame in 2005, eight honorary degrees from universities across North America, and three Juno Awards (the highest honor in Canadian music). He was also named an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2009.

Legacy

Raffi's influence can still be felt today in the form of his beloved music and books that continue to delight generations of children. His work as an advocate for children's issues is also highly regarded and has helped to shape our understanding of how best to protect children from harm.
