Introduction to RZA

RZA (born Robert Fitzgerald Diggs) is an American rapper, record producer, director, actor and author. He is the de facto leader of the Wu-Tang Clan, a rap group that he co-founded in the early 1990s. RZA has produced almost all of Wu-Tang Clan's albums, as well as many solo albums for its members. He has also acted in films such as Coffee and Cigarettes (2003), American Gangster (2007) and The Man with the Iron Fists (2012).

Early Life

RZA was born on July 5, 1969 in Brownsville, Brooklyn, New York City. His father was from North Carolina while his mother was from Maryland. He grew up with three siblings and attended George Westinghouse Career and Technical Education High School in Downtown Brooklyn. At the age of nine, he began learning kung fu from his older brother.

Music Career

When RZA was 17, he started making hip hop beats for local rappers and eventually joined up with neighbor Gary Grice to form a rap group called All in Together Now. In 1992, he formed Wu-Tang Clan with eight other members. They released their debut album Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) in 1993 to universal acclaim and went on to become one of the most influential rap groups of all time. As the de facto leader of Wu-Tang Clan, RZA produced almost all of their albums and many solo albums for its members. He has also produced several albums for other artists including GZA’s Liquid Swords (1995), Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s Return to the 36 Chambers: The Dirty Version (1995) and Method Man’s Tical (1994).

Acting Career

In 2003, RZA made his acting debut in Jim Jarmusch’s black-and-white film Coffee and Cigarettes. He then went on to appear in films like American Gangster (2007), Repo Men (2010) and The Man with the Iron Fists (2012). He has also appeared as himself on TV shows like Chappelle’s Show (2003–04) and Californication (2013–14).

Personal Life

RZA married Talani Rabb in 2009 and they have four children together. He is a Buddhist and practices meditation daily.
