About Saxon
Saxon is a British heavy metal band formed in Barnsley, England in 1976. The band was founded by bassist Graham Oliver and guitarist Steve Dawson. The band's current lineup includes Oliver and Dawson along with vocalist Biff Byford, rhythm guitarist Paul Quinn, and drummer Nigel Glockler. Saxon is considered to be one of the earliest and most influential members of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal movement.
The Early Years
In 1978, Saxon released their self-titled debut album which featured their hit single “Motorcycle Man”. The album was a success and established them as one of the top new acts in heavy metal at the time. Following this release, Saxon went on to release Wheels of Steel (1980) and Denim and Leather (1981). These albums would cement the band's place in metal history with classic songs such as “Wheels of Steel” and “Princess of the Night”.
Commercial Success
In the 1980s, Saxon achieved commercial success with the release of several highly successful albums such as Strong Arm of the Law (1980), Crusader (1984), and Innocence Is No Excuse (1985). These albums featured some of their most popular songs such as “Strong Arm of the Law”, “Crusader” and “Rock 'N' Roll Gypsy”. Saxon also achieved success in Europe with their single “747 (Strangers in the Night)” which peaked at number 4 on the UK singles chart.
Recent Years
In the 1990s, Saxon continued to tour extensively and released several more critically acclaimed albums such as Unleash the Beast (1997) and Killing Ground (2001). They have also collaborated with other notable metal bands such as Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and Motorhead. In 2018, they released their latest album Thunderbolt which was met with critical acclaim. Saxon continues to tour regularly and are still considered to be one of the most influential bands in heavy metal today.
