Texas is a Grammy-winning band from Scotland that formed in 1986 in Glasgow. The band consists of Sharleen Spiteri (vocals and guitar), Ally McErlaine (guitar), Johnny McElhone (bass) and Eddie Campbell (keyboard). Their sound is a mix of rock, pop and blues with a hint of country. They have released ten studio albums since 1988, which have sold over 35 million copies worldwide. Their single “Say What You Want” was a chart-topper in the UK in 1997. They have also won several BRIT Awards, as well as a Grammy for their album “Ricks Road”. Texas is renowned for their energetic live shows and they continue to tour extensively across the world.

The Band Members

Sharleen Spiteri is the lead singer and songwriter of Texas. She was born in 1967 in Glasgow and grew up listening to classic rock records by the likes of Led Zeppelin and Bob Dylan. She started out her career as a session musician and then joined forces with Johnny McElhone to form Texas. Ally McErlaine is the lead guitarist of Texas. He hails from Northern Ireland and began playing guitar at the age of four. He has also collaborated with other musicians such as Brian Eno, Kanye West, Bryan Adams and many more. Johnny McElhone is the bassist of Texas and he was born in 1967 in Glasgow. He started out as a member of the post-punk band Altered Images before joining forces with Sharleen Spiteri to form Texas. Eddie Campbell joined Texas in 2002 and he provides keyboards for the band.

Notable Achievements

In 1997, Texas received their first BRIT Award for Best British Group. Their single “Say What You Want” reached number one on the UK Singles Chart in 1997 and it was certified Gold by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI). In 1999, they released their album “Ricks Road” which went on to win a Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Album. In 2002, they received their second BRIT Award for Best British Live Act. In 2003, their single “Inner Smile” was certified Platinum by the BPI. Texas continues to tour extensively around Europe, Australia, Japan and North America. They have remained popular amongst music fans for over 30 years and show no signs of slowing down anytime soon.
