The Darkness are an English rock band from Lowestoft, Suffolk, United Kingdom. The band consists of Justin Hawkins, his brother Dan Hawkins, Frankie Poullain and Rufus Taylor. The group formed in 2000 and have released four studio albums as well as several EPs and singles. The group's musical style is a mix of hard rock and glam rock, with elements of genres such as blues-rock, progressive rock and classic rock.

The Formation of the Band

The formation of The Darkness dates back to the late 1990s when Justin Hawkins and his brother Dan were in a covers band called “Empire”. After the disbandment of Empire in 1999, Justin and Dan decided to form their own band with bassist Frankie Poullain and drummer Ed Graham. After several rehearsals and numerous lineup changes, the final lineup was settled in 2002 with the addition of drummer Rufus Taylor.

The Band's Success

In 2003 The Darkness released their debut studio album “Permission to Land” which was met with critical acclaim and commercial success. It reached number one on the UK Albums Chart and spawned hit singles such as “I Believe in a Thing Called Love” and “Growing on Me”. The album was also well received in other countries such as Australia, Canada, Ireland and New Zealand where it achieved platinum status.

Touring Career

The band has toured extensively over the years both as a headliner and as a supporting act for other bands such as Foo Fighters, Weezer and Taylor Swift. They have also performed at various festivals such as Reading & Leeds Festival, Download Festival, Southside Festival and Glastonbury Festival.

The Darkness have released four studio albums: Permission to Land (2003), One Way Ticket to Hell…And Back (2005), Hot Cakes (2012) and Last of Our Kind (2015). They have also released several EPs and singles such as “Love Is Only a Feeling” (2004), “Friday Night” (2005) and “Solid Gold” (2012).
