Biography

Tommy Emmanuel is an Australian fingerstyle guitarist and songwriter known for his complex fingerpicking style and energetic performances. His career as a guitarist began in the 1960s with the band Goldrush, but he has since released numerous solo albums, as well as teaming up with other noted guitarists. He has been awarded two ARIA music awards, five Guitar Player magazine Readers Choice Awards, and the Order of Australia Medal. He is renowned for his technical ability and distinctive playing style, which combines elements of blues, jazz, folk and classical music.

Early Life

Tommy Emmanuel was born in 1955 in Muswellbrook, New South Wales. He grew up in a musical family where his father taught him to play the steel guitar at age 4. By age 6, he was performing professionally on Australian television. He started playing guitar at age 11 and in the years that followed, developed a unique fingerpicking style of playing that combined his passion for blues and jazz with his classical training.

Career Highlights

In 1976, Emmanuel joined the group The Southern Star Band and went on to tour extensively throughout Australia. During this time he released two albums with them: “The Journey” (1978) and “Raw & Alive” (1979). In the 1980s he became a member of the highly acclaimed guitar trio The Trinity Session, who released a studio album in 1981. In 1989 he released his first solo album “Terra Firma”. Since then he has released many more solo albums including “The Mystery” (2010), “Little by Little” (2011) and “Accomplice One” (2018). He has also collaborated with numerous other musicians such as Martin Taylor, Chet Atkins, Steve Morse, and Jorma Kaukonen.

Awards & Achievements

Emmanuel has been awarded two ARIA music awards for Best Instrumental Album for “The Mystery” (2013) and “Accomplice One” (2019). He has also received five Guitar Player magazine Readers Choice Awards for Best Acoustic Guitarist in 2002 and 2003; Best Acoustic Guitarist in 2007; Best Acoustic Album for “Little by Little” (2012); and Best Acoustic Album for “Accomplice One” (2019). In 2010 he was presented with the Order of Australia Medal for services to entertainment.
