Fred Hammond is an American gospel singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist who has been in the music industry for over four decades. His musical style is a combination of gospel, jazz, funk, and rhythm and blues. He is most known for being the former frontman of the gospel group Commissioned and launching his solo career in the early 1990s.
Early Life & Career
Fred Hammond was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1960. He grew up singing in church choirs and was heavily influenced by gospel singers James Cleveland and Andraé Crouch. By the age of 10, he had already begun playing drums and bass guitar.
Commissioned & Solo Career
In 1981, Fred joined the gospel group Commissioned and became their frontman. During his time with the group, they released eight albums and won multiple awards including a Grammy Award nomination for Best Gospel Choir or Chorus Album. In 1992, Fred launched his solo career with the album ""Pages of Life"", which was certified Gold by RIAA. His other albums include ""Souled Out"", ""Free to Worship"", ""The Spirit of David"", and ""United Tenors"".
