Who Are Heilung?

Heilung is a Danish music project which draws its inspiration from the ancient Germanic and Nordic cultures. The band was founded in 2014 by Kai Uwe Faust, Christopher Juul and Maria Franz. Their music has been described as “Viking metal”, and their live performances feature tribal drums, dramatic costumes, and spiritual chanting.

The Music of Heilung

Heilung combines traditional Nordic and Germanic instruments such as frame drums, lurs and horns with modern electronics to create a unique sound. Their songs are heavily influenced by historical texts and recordings from the early medieval period of Europe. They often use samples of old Scandinavian artifacts such as swords and spears to add to their soundscapes. Heilung’s lyrics are based on ancient Norse mythology, focusing on Viking gods such as Odin, Thor and Freyr.

Collaborations with Other Artists

Heilung have collaborated with several other artists over the years. In 2016 they joined forces with Norwegian musician Einar Selvik to form the group “Borealis”. They have also worked with fellow Viking metal band Wardruna and German black metal project Helrunar.

Live Performances

Heilung’s live performances are often described as “ritualistic”. The band members dress in traditional Viking clothing and perform in front of a large drum circle. They also often use fire-based special effects to create an atmosphere of mysticism and ritual. Heilung have performed at various music festivals across Europe including Wacken Open Air in Germany, Roskilde Festival in Denmark, Hellfest in France, and Sónar Festival in Spain.
