His father was a professional soldier who had served in World War II and his mother was a homemaker. Growing up, Browne was exposed to various musical styles and wrote his first song at age 14. He dropped out of high school at 16 and moved to Los Angeles, where he started to perform in local clubs.

Rise to Fame

Browne's big break came in 1971 when he signed with Asylum Records. His self-titled debut album was released that year and yielded two minor hits, ""Doctor My Eyes"" and ""Rock Me on the Water."" His next two releases, For Everyman (1973) and Late for the Sky (1974), were bigger successes and included such fan favorites as ""Take It Easy"" and ""Fountain of Sorrow.""

'Running on Empty'

Browne's next album, The Pretender (1976), featured the hit ""Here Come Those Tears Again"" and received critical acclaim. After releasing two more albums—Hold Out (1980) and Lawyers in Love (1983)—he released his most popular album to date, Running on Empty (1977). The album featured many songs recorded during tour stops on his 1977 tour and included the hit ""Running on Empty.""

In the decades that followed, Browne continued to record as well as tour regularly. His albums included Lives in the Balance (1986), World in Motion (1989), I'm Alive (1993), Looking East (1996), The Naked Ride Home (2002) and Time the Conqueror (2008).
