His family relocated to Los Angeles, California when he was 3 years old and he grew up in the city's San Fernando Valley.

During his teenage years, Jon B. began to develop a passion for music and soon wrote his first song at the age of 17. He subsequently signed a contract with Epic Records in 1995 and released his debut album titled Bonafide which was certified gold by the RIAA in 1996. The album spawned two top 20 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 chart - ""Someone to Love"" (featuring Babyface) and ""They Don't Know"".
