He attended Eisenhower Senior High School and also took classes at Houston Community College. Growing up he was influenced by artists such as Tupac Shakur and Notorious B.I.G.

Jones started his career as an independent artist in 2004 with the release of his debut album Who Is Mike Jones? The album was a commercial success, debuting at number four on the US Billboard 200 chart and selling over 500,000 copies. The album featured hit singles such as “Still Tippin’” and “Back Then.” The success of his debut album led him to sign a deal with Warner Bros Records in 2005. In 2006 he released his second studio album The American Dream which featured collaborations with artists such as Slim Thug, Paul Wall, Magno, Bun B and T-Pain. In 2008 Jones was involved in a feud with fellow Houston rapper Lil' Flip which resulted in both artists releasing diss tracks directed at each other. In 2011 Jones was arrested for drug possession after police found marijuana and cocaine in his car during a traffic stop.

Jones is currently married to Lauren Marlowe but very little is known about their relationship or any personal details. In 2019 he announced that he was expecting a child with Marlowe.
