Early Life & Career Beginnings
Mila J was born Jamila Akiko Aba Chilombo on November 18, 1984 in Los Angeles, California. She is the younger sister of singer/songwriter Miyoko Chilombo and the niece of legendary producer/songwriter Raphael Saadiq. Her father is Japanese-American and her mother is African American and Native American. Mila J began her career as a member of the girl group Gyrl alongside her sister Miyoko in 1997. The group released one album before disbanding in 2003.
Breakthrough with M.I.L.A.
In 2014, Mila J released her fourth studio album M.I.L.A., which featured the hit singles “My Main” and “Smoke Drink Break Up” featuring Ty Dolla Sign and Problem.The album peaked at number 28 on the Billboard 200 chart and was later certified gold by the RIAA.
Recent Projects
Since releasing M.I.L.A., Mila J has continued to record music for various projects including the 2016 EP 213 (with Ty Dolla Sign) and the 2017 EP Dopamine (with Problem). She has also appeared as a guest vocalist on songs with DJ Mustard, B.o.B, Meek Mill, T-Pain, Demi Lovato, and many more.
