Who is SKÁLD?
SKÁLD is the stage name of Gunnar Þórðarson, a 25 year old multi-talented musician from Iceland. He's most known for his blend of classical and modern music, as well as his innovative and experimental production techniques. His work has been compared to the likes of Björk, Auður, and Jónas Sigurðsson.
Early Life and Musical Beginnings
Gunnar was born in Reykjavík in 1995, and was exposed to music from a very early age. His parents were both musicians, with his father playing the drums and his mother playing the keyboards. He began learning the piano at age 9, and soon picked up the guitar as well. By the time he was 13, he was already writing his own songs.
Career
At age 16, Gunnar began performing live gigs in local venues around Reykjavík. He quickly gained a following for his mesmerizing performances and unique sound. In 2014 he released his debut album “Reykjavík” which featured some of his most popular tracks to date. Since then, he’s released two more albums “Skáld” (2016) and “Saga” (2018), with both albums receiving critical acclaim.
Collaborations
Gunnar has also collaborated with several other artists over the years. He’s worked with Björk on her album “Vulnicura” (2015) as well as Auður on her album “Amma” (2017). He’s also collaborated with Jónas Sigurðsson on several projects including the EP “Lög og Tónlist” (2017).
Style
Gunnar’s style can be described as experimental and progressive. He often combines traditional Icelandic instruments such as the Hardingfele (a type of fiddle) with modern electronic production techniques. His music is often described as hauntingly beautiful, with its combination of ambient synths and acoustic instrumentation.
