Syd – A Career in Music
Sydney Bennett, known professionally as Syd (stylized as SΔD or SYD), is an American singer, songwriter, record producer, DJ and audio engineer. She rose to fame as a founding member of the alternative hip hop collective Odd Future and was the lead vocalist of the soul-influenced R&B band The Internet. Over the course of her career Syd has released two solo albums (‘Fin’ in 2017 and ‘Always Never Home’ in 2019) as well as several EPs. She has also worked on production for other artists including Solange, Kehlani and Mac Miller.
Early Life
Syd was born in Los Angeles, California in 1992. She began playing the piano aged six and wrote her first song aged nine. As a teenager she attended music production classes at the Los Angeles Recording School. In 2009 she joined Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All (Odd Future for short) a hip hop collective founded by Tyler, The Creator.
Career with Odd Future
As part of Odd Future Syd released two albums; 'The Odd Future Tape' in 2008 and 'Radical' in 2010. She also featured on some of Tyler’s solo projects including his debut album ‘Goblin’ (2011). In 2011 she left the collective to pursue a solo career.
The Internet
In 2011 Syd formed the neo soul band The Internet with Matt Martians, Christopher Smith and Patrick Paige II. The group released their debut album ‘Purple Naked Ladies’ in 2011 and their second album ‘Feel Good’ in 2013. Syd served as the lead vocalist and executive producer for both albums.
Solo Career
In 2017 Syd released her debut solo album ‘Fin’ which was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Urban Contemporary Album. The album peaked at number 18 on the US Billboard 200 chart and featured lead single ‘All About Me’ which debuted at number 17 on the US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. In April 2019 she released her second solo album ‘Always Never Home’ which debuted at number five on US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.
