Who are The Go-Go's

The Go-Go's are an all-female rock band from Los Angeles, California, United States. The group was formed in 1978 and consists of Belinda Carlisle (vocals), Jane Wiedlin (guitar and backing vocals), Charlotte Caffey (guitar and keyboards), Gina Schock (drums) and Kathy Valentine (bass).

The Go-Go's were one of the most successful all-female bands of the early 1980s. Between 1981 and 1984, the band released three studio albums: Beauty and the Beat (1981), Vacation (1982) and Talk Show (1984). Their singles including ""We Got the Beat"", ""Our Lips Are Sealed"", ""Vacation"", ""Head Over Heels"" and ""Turn to You"" were all top 10 hits in the US and UK.

Early Years and Formation

Prior to forming The Go-Go's, Belinda Carlisle and Jane Wiedlin were members of an all-female punk rock band called The Misfits. They disbanded in 1978 and formed a new band with Charlotte Caffey on guitar and backing vocals, Margot Olavarria on bass, Elissa Bello on drums and Paula Jean Brown on vocals. The group renamed themselves The Go-Go's after a local club called The Whisky a Go Go.

Breakthrough Success

In 1981, The Go-Go's released their debut album Beauty and the Beat which featured their hit single ""We Got the Beat"". The song was a huge hit in both the US and UK, reaching number two on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It was also certified gold in both countries. Other singles from the album included ""Our Lips Are Sealed"" which also reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and ""Vacation"" which reached number eight.

Later Years and Collaborations

In 1982, The Go-Go's released their second album Vacation which was certified platinum in the US. It featured their hit single ""Vacation"" which peaked at number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. In 1984, they released their third album Talk Show which featured their single ""Head Over Heels"". The band has also collaborated with other artists including Cyndi Lauper, Stevie Nicks, The B-52s and Belle & Sebastian.

Legacy

The Go-Go's have earned numerous awards including an MTV Video Music Award for Best New Artist in 1982. They have also been inducted into both the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2011 and the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2017. They remain one of the most successful all-female bands ever.
