The Stranglers are an English rock band formed in Guildford, Surrey in 1974. They had success with their debut album Rattus Norvegicus and have had over 20 chart singles and 17 Top 40 albums in the UK. They have sold about 10 million records worldwide.
About the Band
The Stranglers were founded by bassist and vocalist J.J. Burnel, guitarist and vocalist Hugh Cornwell, drummer Jet Black and keyboardist Dave Greenfield. The band originally formed as a punk rock outfit but their sound has since developed to include a wide range of styles from post-punk to new wave and gothic rock.
Notable Works
Some of The Stranglers' most notable works include their third album No More Heroes (1977), which spawned their classic hit single ""No More Heroes"". Their fifth album, The Raven (1979), featured the hit single ""Duchess"" and was their most successful album in the UK, reaching number 4 in the album charts. In 1981 they released La Folie, which reached number 5 in the UK album charts, followed by Aural Sculpture (1984), which peaked at number 7 in the album charts.
Reunions & Later Work
In 1990 The Stranglers reunited for two concerts at London's Wembley Stadium, with all four original members performing together for the first time since 1982. They released two further albums in the 1990s before going on hiatus again in 2000. In 2004 Hugh Cornwell left the band and was replaced by guitarist Baz Warne, who has remained with the band ever since. The Stranglers released their seventeenth studio album Giants (2012) and continue to tour and perform live shows.
