Thom Yorke is an English musician best known as the frontman for the iconic rock band Radiohead. He is also a solo artist, and producer. Born Thomas Edward Yorke on 7 October 1968 in Northamptonshire, England, he rose to fame with Radiohead's breakthrough album The Bends in 1995. His distinctive falsetto-style vocals and innovative songwriting have made him one of the most acclaimed and influential artists of his generation.
Early Years
Yorke was raised in Oxfordshire. He attended Abingdon School, where he met future Radiohead bandmates Colin Greenwood and Ed O'Brien in 1985. It was there that he first began writing songs, influenced by popular bands such as R.E.M., The Smiths and The Cure. He went on to study English at the University of Exeter, but dropped out before graduating to pursue music full-time.
Radiohead
After leaving university, Yorke formed an alternative rock band with his schoolmates, called On A Friday (later changed to Radiohead). In 1992, they released their debut EP Drill and began touring extensively in England. The following year, they signed with Parlophone Records and released their first single “Creep” which quickly became a hit in the U.K., peaking at number seven on the UK Singles Chart. Their subsequent albums The Bends (1995) and OK Computer (1997) established them as one of the most pioneering and influential bands of the late 90s.
Solo Career
Throughout his career with Radiohead, Yorke has also released solo work including 2006's The Eraser and 2014's Tomorrow's Modern Boxes. He has collaborated with several other artists, most notably Nigel Godrich with whom he formed experimental electronic act Atoms For Peace in 2009. In 2019 he released his third solo album Anima which debuted at number three on the UK Albums Chart.
