Biography

"To me, he’s a musician’s musician because his music feels both simple and disarmingly complex at the same time." -William Wayland, Static & Blur “…the musical equivalent of California cuisine.” -Nate Seltenrich, East Bay Express “I’ve never heard anything quite like it.” Paul Liberatore, Marin IJ “Chris Peck is a singular artist.” Evan Karp, KQED Chris Peck has been writing and recording since his first cassette in 1994. Long known as Peck the Town Crier, he released a string of left-field albums and music videos over the past decade. But beginning with the Ancient Baby album, released 2019, Peck began to perform under his given name and drill down into a simpler, more earthy sound. His latest release is "Exact Change", is a solo performance album which continues this direction with tight song forms, minimalist production, and intimate lyrical themes. With the help of producers Alex Rather-Taylor and Miles Wick, Peck recorded this batch of new songs in its most direct and immediate form, sitting down with his guitar and delivering the songs in front of a pair of microphones. On stage, Chris Peck’s band is a light-footed quartet that balances original songwriting with long-form improvisation, with Adam Bowers (steel guitar and voice), Tommy O’Mahoney (bass) and JT John (drums). Chris's music has been featured on MTV.com, the Wall Street Journal.com, and a host of indie radio stations including KALX, KPFA, KWMR. He has also contributed music to films like "Gardeners of Eden" (Netflix), and recorded themes for podcasts like "Reckonings" and "Welcome to the Mushroom Hour". As a performer, he has toured the United States and Europe, sharing stages with Con Brio, the Naked Hearts, Marius Atherton, Inward Creature, Brandon Zahursky, Midi Matilda and many more. Peck's musical journey has been a restless one. Accordingly, has adopted a number of band names and monikers over the years (including Peck the Town Crier, the Crymuscles, and Ancient Baby) before finally coming to rest on Chris Peck. In addition to his own work as a songwriter, Peck has produced two albums of accompanying music for American Book Award Winner Tongo Eisen-Martin, with their long-running collaboration LOAN.
