I just turned 50. I’ve been making music since I was 19. Many years ago I was collaborating with someone I used to admire. We were having a difficult time getting the music together and this person said, “Why are we making this track? What is the meaning of the track? What are we trying to say?” I didn’t immediately have an answer. My lack of response annoyed the person and they asked, “How could you write music and not have an intention or a meaning to the music you’re making?” I think I responded by saying something like, “Well, I make music to make music. The meaning sometimes comes while making the track. Sometimes the meaning is clear and sometimes I have a hard time understanding or don’t know it at all.” This did not sit well with the person. After a few moments, they stopped our session. They were visibly upset and told me, “There’s no point wasting energy making music if you don’t have a reason and a purpose for doing so.” We parted ways calmly but inside I did not take that exchange well, and for some time doubted my reasons for making music. Now, after all these years, I can clearly tell you my purpose and reason for making music. I make music to make music. I believe this is the precise reason anyone creates music or any other kind of art. The act of creation is sacred. Sure, we can start out and say to ourselves I am now writing a love song, I am now writing a revolutionary track, I am now writing a song to get people to dance, etc. But, if you are truly being creative you don’t have complete control over what will come out and how it will be received. If you get the exact result you want before starting every time, I don’t think you’re necessarily being creative. Maybe you have a formula and you execute the formula. I know that is extreme, but my point is music is beyond language and it is beyond our reasons for making it. I think music might be the best reason I’ve heard for the existence of the divine. I say all of this to preface the track I’m now presenting to you. I wrote Love Forward on an MPC Live (sampling sequencer/drum machine) sitting in the kitchen. I started the track with a clear mind, excited to create something purely for the pleasure of doing so. I didn’t know where I was going when I started. And I love where I ended up. So what is the meaning of this track? What is the purpose and the intention of it? You tell me.
