Dumont d'Urville is the historic French resort. Station opened in 1956, Dumont d'Urville bears the name of the first Frenchman to set foot in Antarctica. Petrel Island, on which it was built, is located on the coast of Adelie Land, a territory administered by the French Southern and Antarctic Lands. The Polar Institute is responsible for the functional management of the station and the conduct of scientific projects. In 1983, an accident which remained unreported decimated the entire team on site as well as a rescue team sent to the site the following year. Another team arrived on site a few months later to rebuild the base and investigate. To date, no explanation has been provided.
